UW Bioengineering Assistant Professor Dr. Kim Woodrow led a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation youth educational outreach event on July 23.

The event brought 30 students and 10 educators to BioE. The event provided 6th to 8th grade participants in one of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s summer programs with first-hand experience of  a college campus and laboratory and engaged them in inquiry-based learning activities in STEM applications for pediatric HIV.

Dr. Woodrow led an open discussion about the global prevalence of the HIV virus, particularly in youth populations. She and members of her lab guided event participants through several hands-on activities investigating the mechanism/action of the HIV virus as well as drug delivery strategies for HIV prevention and treatment.
