Cochlear implants offer deaf and hard of hearing people a significant improvement in the ability to hear, however, present challenges for hearing music and speech in noisy environments.

UW Bioengineering professor Dr. Jay Rubinstein (joint in Otolaryngology, and Director of the Virginia Merrill Bloedel Hearing Research Center) and collaborators have fine-tuned the signal processing abilities of the implants, which allows music to be heard and offers possible links to future improvements.

The group has published their initial findings in the IEEE Transactions on Neural Systems and Rehabilitation Engineering.
