The College of Engineering and the School of Medicine at the University of Washington invite applications and nominations for Chair of the Department of Bioengineering.

This full-time and tenured position with the appointment at the rank of Professor  will lead a department with a long history of dedication to excellence, tremendous growth and accomplishment in research and scholarship, state-of-the-art facilities, and strong connections to industries. This is a 12-month service period per year position (July – June) with an anticipated start date in Summer 2021.  All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research and service.

The Chair will build on the department’s commitment to inclusive and excellent undergraduate and graduate education and research. The chair will lead the department to provide leadership and service in research, education, and diversity to the University, the state of Washington, the nation, and the community. The Chair will be expected to represent the department with alumni, donors, industry and the community, and lead advancement activities.

The University of Washington is ranked No. 3 among U.S. public universities and 14th in the world on the 2019 Academic Ranking of World Universities with a graduate  Bioengineering program that consistently ranks in top 10 (the US News ranking). UW Bioengineering has a tradition of interdisciplinary collaborations and strong partnerships between the College of Engineering and the School of Medicine as well as with industry, national labs, and other academic institutions.   • Biomaterials and Regenerative Medicine
  • Instrumentation, Imaging and Image-Guided Therapy
  • Molecular and Cellular Engineering

The department’s faculty have played a central role in major collaborative centers at the University such as the newly formed UWEB-21, National ESCA and Surface Analysis Center for Biomedical Problems (NESAC-BIO),Ultrasound-based Washington Molecular Imaging and Therapy Center (uWAMIT), The Institute of Stem Cell & Regenerative Medicine (ISCRM), the Center for Cardiovascular Biology (CCVB), Molecular Engineering and Sciences Institute (MolES), the Institute for Protein Design (IPD) and the Center for Neurotechnology (CNT) among many other inter-departmental, multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional Centers. The new chair will also have a unique opportunity to lead the department in new research directions that engage in the UW’s new Population Health Initiative, which seeks to address all causes of health inequities.  The department currently consists of 49 core tenure/tenure-track and research faculty, 85 administrative and research staff, 211 undergraduates, 66 master’s and 116 PhD students. Requirements

The search is open to candidates with a Ph.D. degree, MD or foreign equivalent and national leadership experience. An outstanding record of scholarship, undergraduate and graduate education, along with demonstrated collaborative leadership and management skills and a demonstrated commitment to advancing diversity, equity and inclusion are required.

In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (non-U.S.) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE), or foreign equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
