Abstract:

Fact: Mental health and substance abuse cause 25% of health related disability worldwide
Fact: More than three-quarters of counties in the United States have a serious shortage of mental health professionals
Fact: Only 2 of 10 people living with a mental health or substance use disorder get treatment from a mental health specialist in any given year
Solution: Disruptive innovation
Dr. Jurgen Unützer, Chair of UW Psychiatry and Behavioral Science, will present examples of disruptive innovations developed that are dramatically improving access to effective mental health care. These include new models of care based on ‘task sharing’ principles and innovative technologies with the potential to revolutionize the way we deliver care. With disruptive innovations, we can increase both the reach and effectiveness of mental health treatments in Seattle and around the world.
