My group is aiming to improve our understanding of early human brain growth by developing novel imaging and image analysis techniques that can safely and effectively evaluate babies before and after birth. To achieve this we are engineering solutions to image freely moving subjects that allows the study of anatomy and physiology without the need for sedation. We are using these images to build more detailed spatial and temporal maps of normal and abnormal development, to better characterize how babies grow normally and how these growth trajectories can vary in health and disease.

Methods
MR image acquisition and reconstruction during subject motion,
Image resolution enhancement in structural and diffusion imaging
Algorithms for automated tissue segmentation and anatomical parcellation
Biomedical shape and pattern analysis,
Graph methods for studying network connectivity and its change over time.
Spatial statistics for brain mapping

Applications
Early human brain tissue growth patterns
The development of fetal brain functional and structural connectivity
The impact of genes and the environment on early brain development
Imaging biomarkers to improve the management of pregnancies and premature birth

My group develops and applies new computational and mathematical techniques to study and map the structure and function of the brain. Our work ranges from developing novel computational imaging and image analysis algorithms, to their application in neuroscience and clinical radiology and neonatology. Some of the engineering problems we are currently addressing include motion correction of fetal MRI studies, diffusion imaging and structural connectivity in the developing fetus, functional imaging and functional connectivity of the fetal brain, the construction of spatio-temporal atlases of brain connectivity and cortical folding, and the development of bio-markers for the clinical assessment of pregnancies and premature neonatal health.
