Professor Patrick Boyle has been promoted to Vice Chair of Operations in the University of Washington’s Department of Bioengineering. In his expanded role, Boyle will be responsible for a portfolio focused on financial stewardship, space strategy, policy development, and faculty engagement.
As Associate Chair for Operations since 2024, Boyle led the faculty policy committee as it clarified faculty rights and responsibilities to reduce institutional risk. He also partnered with departmental leadership to navigate the rapidly shifting funding landscape in higher education.
“Pat Boyle has had an immediate and positive impact these last two years. He has established himself as a trusted bridge between a complex institution and our faculty as they navigate it. He has already strengthened our shared governance and helped build a strong operational foundation,” said Department Chair Princess Imoukhuede.
“As Vice Chair for Operations, Pat will bring his people-first, solution-oriented approach to the department’s financial health, strategic use of space, and faculty engagement. Pat’s growth from Associate Chair to Vice Chair reflects something we’re building intentionally in BioE: faculty who know how the department works and who are prepared to lead at a larger scale. This kind of growth doesn’t happen by accident. Our blueprint, “Impact Built Together,” supports faculty who lead in research, in the classroom, and in mentoring, while building the operational and policy fluency to strengthen the department at every level.”
Boyle heads the Cardiac Systems Simulation Lab in the Department of Bioengineering, which studies the heart’s electrical system, biomechanics, and fluid dynamics using computational modeling. He holds an adjunct appointment in the Department of Medicine (Division of Cardiology) and is also a member of UW’s Institute for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine, Center for Cardiovascular Biology, the eScience Institute, and the Institute of Medical Data Science.
