UW Bioengineering junior undergraduates Kevin Gray and Emi Lutz have received DAAD-RISE internships to study in Germany in summer 2015.

Kevin, a member of Deok-Ho Kim’s lab, will travel to the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences in the town of Reinbach, which is near the larger cities Bonn and Cologne in western Germany. In his internship, he will focus on designing stem cell based solutions to unstable dental implants and critical sized bone defects.

Emi will work on developing cell chips for neurotoxicity testing at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg in Erlangen, a city in the Bavaria region of southern Germany.

DAAD-RISE is a summer internship program of the German Academic Exchange Service. The program enables 300 students each year from the United States, Canada and the UK to pursue 2 to 3-month long internships in the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences and engineering at top German universities and research institutions. RISE interns are matched with doctoral students whom they assist, and who serve as their mentors.
