UW Bioengineering direct freshman admit Solomon Muche arrived in Washington just two years ago, having emigrated from Ethiopia with his family. He barely spoke English and soon found himself and his family homeless. Despite the enormous adversity he encountered, Solomon was determined to find a better future and dreamed of attending college. Even as he struggled initially to learn English and complete high school homework, he was aided by a mentor who helped him apply to UW and inspired by the doctors and scientists that visited the shelters.
Now accepted into UW and a direct freshman admit in UW Bioengineering, Solomon says “I just want to learn science”. He is off to a great start, continuing a research project he started over the summer in UW BioE Associate Professor Dr. Wendy Thomas’s lab through the UW GENOM/ALVA program.
