Three UW Bioengineering faculty members have been selected to join the Washington State Academy of Sciences (WSAS): Valerie Daggett, Paul Kinahan and Ruikang Wang. They are among a cohort of 36 educators and scientists from across Washington—including a total of 15 UW faculty members—elected to WSAS in 2024. Selection to the Academy recognizes individuals for their outstanding scientific and technical achievements and their commitment to using science to address issues in Washington state and around the world.

Valerie Daggett, David and Nancy Auth Endowed Professor of Bioengineering

For over 30 years, Valerie Daggett has innovated in the field of protein science, focusing on protein folding and unfolding and their connection to amyloid diseases. Her pioneering work has led to the development of unique computational and experimental methods, resulting in the discovery and characterization of a new protein structure associated with toxicity early in amyloid formation.

Paul Kinahan, Professor of Radiology and Bioengineering

Paul Kinahan is recognized for his contributions to the science and engineering of medical imaging systems. He also holds prominent leadership positions in national programs and scientific societies dedicated to advancing the capabilities of medical imaging, including the Medical Imaging and Data Resource Center (MIDRC).

Ruikang Wang, Professor of Bioengineering

Ruikang (Ricky) Wang‘s groundbreaking contributions to biomedical optics, notably the invention of optical microangiography–a technique that produces dynamic 3D images of blood and lymphatic vessels–and the development of other novel imaging technologies, have revolutionized clinical practice and enhanced patient outcomes. His extensive research, documented through numerous publications, patents and clinical applications, has played a crucial role in shaping the field of biomedical optics.

This recognition highlights the exceptional work being done within our department and the impact our faculty has on advancing scientific knowledge.
