UW Bioengineering Professor Ruikang Wang’s research is featured on the cover of the September/October issue of the journal Ophthalmic Surgery, Lasers & Imaging (OSLI) Retina. Dr. Wang, a noted innovator in the field of optical imaging, and collaborators published two papers in the issue investigating applications of OCT angiography.
Described as the “fifth era” of optical coherence tomography offering significant improvement upon current methods, OCT angiography is a non-invasive imaging technique that provides a 3-dimensional reconstruction of microvasculature within the retina and choroid. The technology acquires images by detecting motion of scattering particles within sequential, repeated OCT scans of the same location of the retina.
The papers explore the potential of of OCT angiography techniques for diagnosis, treatment and management of ocular diseases such as diabetic retinopathy (DR), age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and macular telangiectasia type 2 (MacTel2).
