A new multi-institutional research program, the Cardiac Energy Grid, funded by NHLBI for the next 5 years, brings investigators at UCSD (Andrew McCulloch and Jeff Omen), University of Michigan (Daniel Beard and Brian Carlson), Medical College of Wisconsin (Rajan Dash), and UW investigators Rong Tian, Michael Regnier, with principal Investigator James Bassingthwaighte together in experimental studies ranging from mitochondrial and cellular metabolism to contractile performance and electrophysiology to the integrated heart in hypertension and failure, using mathematical modeling for experiment design and analysis, defining an integrated understanding of cardiac function in health and disease.
