Natacha Lou Comandante will be participating in the 2015 MIT Summer Research Program (MSRP). She will work with Dr. Michael Mitchell in the Langer lab of MIT's Biological Engineering Department for two months.

Alex Jiao, a fifth year Ph.D. student in Assistant Professor Deok-Ho Kim's lab has received a NIH F31 Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award. Alex's research project is entitled "Nanoscale 3-D Cell Sheet Engineering: A Platform for Studying the Cardiac Microenvironment and Tissue-Level Heart Structure-Function Relationships."
Student and staff researchers from BioE helped two teams take home top honors at April’s UW Foster School of Business 2015 Alaska Airlines Environmental Innovation Challenge. The teams pitched Hook, a home automation solution, and EcoStream, a water conservation system that aims to make saving water fun and easy.

UW Bioengineering undergraduate Abbi Helfer was selected for the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP). Abbi will work in the lab of Dr. Hans-Peter Kiem, whose research focuses on stem cell biology, and stem cell gene transfer to treat patients with genetic and acquired diseases.
UW Bioengineering undergraduate Kadin Brooks has been selected as an Amgen Scholar and will participated in the 2015 Stanford Summer Research Program (SSRP)/Amgen Scholars Program. He'll live on-campus at Stanford University from June-August and work full-time on a research project focused on cell biology.

Junior undegraduate Nikita Milani has been accepted to The University of Tokyo's Amgen Scholars program and will travel to Japan in summer 2015. Nikita will work in the lab of Yasuyuki Sakai, who investigates physiologically relevant cultured organ models, and implantable liver and pancreatic tissue scaffolds.

Quinton was one of the first practitioners of bioengineering and served an integral role in forming UW’s Center for Bioengineering, which became what is now the Department of Bioengineering. Quinton is a 2009 recipient of UW’s Diamond Award for Entrepreneurship and was also honored with UW’s highest honor for a graduate — the Alumnus Summa Laude Dignatus award.
At the age of five, second-year UW Bioengineering Ph.D. student Gary Liu was diagnosed with a chronic condition called minimal change kidney disease. His experience with the disease inspired him to study bioengineering and develop solutions to treat kidney disease. With bioengineering, Gary aims to improve his own health and help others suffering from kidney disease.
